Current Peace Issues

Although LMPC's work in conflict transformation is the most popular aspect of our ministry, our mission is to educate people on the full-range of Christian peace and justice concerns.

Below you will find information on educational programs offered by LMPC to churches and other organizations on the Middle East conflict.  Programs are also available on the biblical foundations for peacemaking and a variety of other topics.  Phone our office for a complete list of possible topics or to explore the option of hosting a program.

We've also included below a statement by Mennonite Central Committee on the war in Iraq as well as a statement approved by the LMPC Board of Directors written in October of 2002, when the war with Iraq was being threatened .  It still expresses our perspective on the war in Iraq, during the current "post-war" period.

LMPC also has an extensive video and book library including resources on a variety of peacemaking topics available for loan.  Contact LMPC if you are interested in borrowing one of our videos, or visit our library if you are interested in checking out books.

Middle East

The events in the Middle East continue to capture front page headlines, and the top of the hour news stories; yet as a nation we remain sadly uninformed or misinformed about this area of the world. Before we can effectively work for peaceful solutions to these seemingly intractable problems, we recognize the need to explore the history of the Middle East conflict, listening to all voices from the region, Christian, Muslim and Jew.

The Lombard Mennonite Peace Center offers a four-week educational series to churches or other interested groups, appropriate for adult Sunday school or evening sessions. Any of the four presentations could stand alone as a single session event as well.  We can also present educational programs on the other topics including programs that relate to the war with Iraq.

Draft Registration

Also available from LMPC is a document to help guide conscientious objectors with draft registration.  Interested persons can also phone our office for draft counseling.

Resources on Peacemaking

LMPC has a range of educational programs and audio-visual resources on the war in Iraq and the response of Christian peacemakers as well as programs that focus on the history of Christian responses to war and peace.  Click here for a full list of programs and resources.

War with Iraq

LMPC affirms the statement from Mennonite Central Committee, joining them in these convictions and the call for the church to focus on Christ's way of peace.

Statement on the War Between the United States and Iraq

As followers of Jesus Christ whose sacrificial death and resurrection victory reconciled humankind to God and to each other, the Lombard Mennonite Peace Center cannot support a war against Iraq.  We join people of conscience everywhere who deplore all war and, thus, oppose this dangerous and misguided move towards violence.  We commit ourselves and our work to the spreading of the gospel of peace, justice and reconciliation between nations and between the individual citizens of those nations. We will work for dialogue among disputing parties and encourage our brothers and sisters in Christ to join us in actively opposing the voices for war and in promoting the cause of peace and right relationships as we seek to build God's kingdom on earth.

LMPC also affirms the statement from Mennonite Church USA Delegate Assembly, held in Charlotte, North Carolina, July 9, 2005.
